Fundación VairolettoFaena Prize Winner
FAENA PRIZE 2012 WINNER IS FRANCO DARÍO VICO, FOR HIS PROJECT "FUNDACIÓN VAIROLETTO"
THE PROPOSAL IS BASED ON VAIROLETTO, A LEGENDARY CHARACTER OF ARGENTINE HISTORY. HE WAS A BANDIT OF THE EARLY 20th CENTURY WHO OPERATED IN SANTA FE PROVINCE, WHERE VICO WAS BORN. VAIROLETTO HAS BEEN CALLED THE "ROBIN HOOD OF THE PAMPAS" FOR HIS SOLIDARITY WITH THE POOR AND HIS ANARCHIC ATTITUDE TOWARDS HIERARCHIES AND OFFICIAL INSTITUTIONS.
Franco Darío Vico will get a total prize of US$75.000. The artist will receive US$25.000 and US$50.000 will be used to finance the project production that will be exhibited at the Faena Arts Center by mid 2013.
As part of his project the artist proposed to divide the pize as follows:
u$s25.000 to organize a new prize to be divided among 25 winners (each one will receive u$s1.000 to produce their works).
u$s25.000 to produce the inauguration, press campaign of the new prize and the production of an institutional video of the "Fundación Vairoletto".
u$s25.000 (the artis's prize).
The Jury remarked that the project is a critique of institutions, a rejection of the sculptural gesture seemingly demanded by the FAC space, as well as the transformation of the prize into a political gesture on redistribution of funds. The proposal also appeared as a challenge to the privileged position of the arts in contemporary society and as an expansion of the artist's practice itself in a reflexive and celebratory way
