Adrift, a beautiful time-lapse of the San Francisco fog

Inspire

This piece undoubtedly constitutes an audio-visual poem dedicated to the California bay’s elegant phenomenon.

Adrift, by Simon Christen, is a time-lapse video filmed over the course of two years in the San Francisco Bay Area. It magnificently shows not only the fog during its daily journey over the bay but also renders to the viewer the metaphorical fog –– that which reminds us that there is movement and beauty beyond what our eyes can reach. Musicalized by Jimmy Lavalle from The Album Leaf, the video transmits the mutual love affair of San Francisco and its fog.

Adrift” is a love letter to the fog of the San Francisco Bay Area. I chased it for over two years to capture the magical interaction between the soft mist, the ridges of the California coast and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. This is where “Adrift” was born.

Each take that makes up the film is between 2 and 4hours long, which in turn resulted in 5 minute hypnotic clouds that denote temperature, dancing and ghosts. In the last take, Simon lets the fog’s moistness soak the camera lens, and by doing so, he is able to evoke an improbable visual delight.

With merely reading some of the messages that viewers left Simon on his website, we can realise the wave of inspiration his work brought into the world. It is the inspiration of a fog that wishes to be a river, which in turn wants to be sea and that thanks to Simon and Lavalle, it embodied for five minutes. This is, a sensual incentive to visit San Francisco.
